My initial reaction to the Tobin Tax was fairly similar. However, I do think there are debate points here:
1. you say 'we' will pay the tax, and you also say 'we' must take some of the responsibility - bit of contradiction there. Also I think the 'we' doesn't represent the whole population, it represents those that have a stake (however small) in those financial instruments.
2. It appears to me that there are a lot of transactions that take place when really the fundamentals haven't changed too much, i am thinking equities and commodities. To an outsider is seems that many of these are actually seeking to make a short term gain on today's piece of news - rather than the long term status.
3. There also seems (!) to be a lot of trading where the trader has no interest in the end product (e.g. wheat or oil), the forwards and future markets were designed to bring stability, but appear to have brought in excess trading.
4. We keep hearing that it is important to keep the banking/trading sector open in the UK, but actually part of me says it may be better if it was someone else's problem

So, could a tax like this have a net result of reducing the amount of trading, and bring about some more stability?

In the end though, I suspect that if a tax was introduced it wouldn't be long before financial instruments were designed to mitigate it anyway

PS I am not a protestor, self interested actor or social commentator - but I amy well be misguided and misinformed

PS James, there was a super essay on R4 last night at about 12.30am by an Italian writer. It was a heartwarming defence of Europeanism and the fact that the notion has been good for us all. I think you would agree with the tenet and you make mention in your opening paragraphs.

To paraphrase our fellow European he wrote, " To any person spouting racism or prejudice I would give them a ticket and a suitcase, and put them among the very people they denigrate.. In every case they would return, shorn of their bigotry"

A wonderful tribute to our current Europeanism and our (yet flawed) EU in particular. And I am sure you would drink a toast to that, James?

We need to tread carefully to not take our Europeanism for granted and i suggest not foolishly follow or promote the current "Graffiti" by a minority of insular 'British Legion' Tories.

Another Good Blog James and i personally would agree with a lot of your ideas for reform.

But i note you do not mention the excellent Convention on Human Rights. Despite the right wing cliché propoganda of "Cats" , the Human Rights Act has been a valuable safeguard for the ordinary citizen and has in fact been welcomed by the Judiciary who historically and jealously guard their powers.

I would suggest that one of the main motives for either UK withdrawal or reform of the EU is to repeal our obligations under this Convention and which action, in the absence of a Bill of Rights, would again leave citizens -such as you and me- at a disadvantage vis-a-vis the State

You also mention removal of EU workplace regulations, and although such advocates cite this for purposes such as "flexibility", "competition" etc etc . the fact is that the current EU Workplace Regs. are the bare minimum required to ensure Workers are Safe, properly remunarated, and treated with equality and dignity. These Regulations did not grow out of a vacuum and we need to look only to recent employment practices in the UK to see serious discrimination, and the need thus for their protection.

So then I am not pursuaded that "shaking it all about" is either necessary or the correct analogy; how about We Lead and not Leave, (nor thow a tantrum).

Very Good (recap) Advice. I agree that especially with the Internet there is simply NO excuse for not doing research on the line of Industry, the company, and the staff interviewing you. Finally if you also fail to have at least 2 perinent questions at the end of the interview then you and the company are not right for each other.
Well done James on a good and timely piece
